Win, Loss for Wildcats

March 3, 2021
Lee Stubblefield

The Cassville Lady Wildcats went on the road Tuesday night, and claimed a 32-23 victory over East Newton in Class 4 District 12 action at Granby. In a reversal of their 36-31 loss to East Newton on February 1, the Ladycats improved to 11-14 with the win. The Cassville girls will hit the road again on Thursday night to take on top-seeded Mt. Vernon in one semifinal.
Seneca defeated Reeds Spring, 44-33, and will face Aurora in the other semifinal.
    Reeds Spring downs Cassville, 43-24
The opening round of the Class 4 District 12 boys basketball tournament pitted Cassville against Reeds Spring in a rematch of the January 5 meeting won by the Wolves, 45-40. Reeds Spring, the #3 seed, earned the home court advantage with a 10-14 overall record.
The Wolves defeated the Wildcats in a sloppy game on Monday night, 43-24.
Cassville was ice cold in the first half. The Wildcats only scored one point in the first quarter: an Aidan Cook free throw at the 3:10 mark. Meanwhile,  Reeds Spring shooters hit four treys and a long deuce in that quarter for a 14-1 lead at the first break.
It was 21-4 in the final minute of the second period when Cassville’s Isaac Hadlow grabbed an offensive board, scored, and hit the add-on free throw for a 21-7 halftime score.
Cassville’s stingy defense held Reeds Spring to just 11 third quarter points. But the Wildcats could only score 10 and trailed 32-17 at the final break.
The Wolves were content to run clock in the final quarter, but committed a slew of turnovers. Cassville pulled within 10 on a three-point play by Cook at the 6:50 mark, but could never cut that lead to single digits. Forced to foul, the Wildcats watched a parade of Wolves score from the free throw line as the clock ran out on a 43-24 Reeds Spring victory.
Ty Cooper led Reeds Spring with 14 points. Aidan Cook scored 10 to lead Cassville.
Cassville finished the season at 4-21. Reeds Spring improved to 11-14 to advance to a Wednesday semifinal against Mt. Vernon.
